Welcome to the SA Masterclass Camp at DoMar
Join me, Steven Akkersdijk, for a kiteboarding camp in Ilha do Guajiru, Brazil, designed for intermediate and advanced riders ready to take their skills to the next level. Set in a stunning beachfront location with reliable winds, this camp combines personalized coaching, theory sessions, and video analysis to help you refine your techniques and achieve your goals. Together, we’ll create an inspiring atmosphere with great food, a vibrant camp vibe, and the perfect environment to push your kiting skills like never before.
The Spot and Conditions
Ilha do Guajiru is a kiteboarder’s paradise. The lagoon fills with the upcoming tide, creating a vast and smooth playground for practicing your tricks. The reliable trade winds typically range from 20–30 knots during peak hours (12:00–15:00), with lighter winds in the mornings and evenings. Located at the far end of the village, Domar offers the widest part of the lagoon with plenty of space to ride away from the crowds.
What to expect?
Coaching
With BB Talkin headsets, you’ll receive real-time, tailored feedback during every session. This cutting-edge system ensures you only hear tips meant for you, even as I switch focus between riders. Coaching is conducted in semi-private sessions, pairing you with another rider at a similar level for a personalized experience.
Video Analysis
Take your progression to the next level with video analysis sessions after your rides. By reviewing your performance frame by frame, we’ll pinpoint areas for improvement and highlight what you’re doing well. This focused feedback helps solidify techniques and ensures every session builds toward your goals.
Theory Lessons
In order to maximize your performance on the water, theory lessons provide the essential knowledge behind techniques, gear, and conditions. These focused sessions ensure you understand the “why” behind the “how,” giving you the tools to tackle challenges and progress with confidence.
Downwinders
Experience the thrill of guided downwinders like the one from Almofala, where you’ll ride along stunning coastlines, lush mangroves, and perfect flat water spots. These adventures blend skill-building with exploration, offering a unique opportunity to progress while soaking in the breathtaking scenery around Ilha do Guajiru.
Exeptional Meals
Fuel your sessions with delicious, freshly prepared meals crafted by Dominik and his team. Using high-quality, local ingredients, every dish is designed to satisfy and energize. From hearty breakfasts to flavorful dinners, the meals at Domar are a highlight, ensuring you’re always ready to perform at your best.
Photography
Work with a professional photographer to capture stunning action shots of your time on the water, showcasing your progress and style. You’ll also receive candid photos from around the camp, preserving the unique moments and atmosphere of the trip. These images provide a lasting memory of your experience, both on and off the water.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours of coaching will I receive?
Over the entire week, you’ll receive about 10 hours of coaching and guidance. This includes approximately 3.5 hours of semi-private coaching sessions, where I’ll focus on personalized tips tailored to your needs, as well as group water sessions, theory lessons, and video analysis. It’s a balanced schedule designed to give you plenty of actionable feedback while leaving time to practice during freeride sessions.
How does the semi-private coaching work?
In semi-private coaching, you’ll be paired with another rider of a similar skill level to ensure focused and personalized progression. Both of you will wear helmets equipped with BB Talkin headsets, allowing me to provide real-time feedback. I’ll switch the audio between riders so you only hear the tips that are specific to you. Depending on the conditions, I’ll either walk into the water alongside you or follow with a kite to give you the best possible coaching experience.
Can I book additional coaching?
This camp is designed to offer optimal coaching time within its schedule. While it’s not possible to book extra coaching sessions during the camp, you can contact me to arrange additional coaching in the week following the camp.
What skill level do I need?
Participants should be self-sufficient and able to ride upwind. To maximize the benefits, it’s recommended that you’ve already experimented with jumps and perhaps a backroll.
Can I request specific coaching goals?
Absolutely! This camp is fully tailored to your personal objectives. Together, we’ll assess your current level and, during the semi-private coaching sessions, work towards achieving your specific goals.
What kite sizes should I bring?
Most riders will find kites between 7m and 12m ideal for the conditions, though this depends on your weight and riding style. The winds are typically 20–30 knots during peak hours (12:00–15:00) but can vary, so I recommend checking the forecast before your trip and preparing for all scenarios.
Do I need to bring my own gear?
Yes, the camp price does not include kiteboarding gear, so you’ll need to bring your own equipment. However, if you don’t have your own or prefer to travel light, there is an option to rent CORE Kiteboarding equipment from DoMar. Be sure to arrange this well in advance by contacting us, so we can ensure availability for your needs.
Do I need a wetsuit?
A wetsuit isn’t necessary for warmth, as the water and air temperatures are tropical. However, you might consider bringing a shorty for impact protection, especially if you’re practicing new tricks or spending extended periods on the water.
What happens if there is no wind?
While Ilha do Guajiru offers reliable trade winds, there’s always a chance of low-wind days. In such cases, we’ll make the most of the time with theory lessons, video analysis, and other activities to enhance your kiteboarding knowledge and experience.
Do the tides affect the location?
Yes, the tides play a role in how we use the lagoon. You can kite directly in front of the pousada at most tides, but during 1.5 hours either side of the extreme low tide, the water levels may be too low. During those times, we’ll head to the mouth of the lagoon, just a short drive or downwinder away, to ensure you’re always riding in ideal conditions.
Can I bring a non-kiting partner?
Yes, non-kiting partners are welcome! DoMar offers a relaxing atmosphere with a pool, beachfront views, and nearby activities to enjoy while you’re on the water.
Will we have private spaces at DoMar?
DoMar operates as a restaurant open to the public, with rooms conveniently located above the restaurant, offering stunning views of the lagoon. While the restaurant creates a lively and social atmosphere, the pool and chill-out area are reserved exclusively for our group. This ensures you have a private space to relax, unwind, and connect with fellow participants, providing the perfect balance of vibrant energy and peaceful retreat after your sessions on the water.
Can I book additional nights at Domar before or after the camp?
Yes, extending your stay is possible, depending on availability. Please contact us, and we’ll inform you about the options.
How do I get to Ilha do Guajiru?
We recommend flying into Fortaleza Airport (FOR). From there, you can arrange a transfer to Ilha do Guajiru; we can assist with organizing this. The drive from the airport is approximately 3,5 hours, depending on traffic. The price for a transfer in a normal taxi is R$700 (~€115)
