Welcome to the SA Masterclass Camp at Our Habitas Caravan Dakhla
Join me, Steven Akkersdijk, for a kiteboarding camp in Dakhla, Morocco, designed for intermediate and advanced riders ready to take their skills to the next level. Set in a stunning location with reliable winds, this camp combines personalized coaching, theory sessions, and video analysis to help you refine your techniques and achieve your goals. Together, we’ll create an inspiring atmosphere with great food, a vibrant camp vibe, and the perfect environment to push your kiting skills like never before.
The Spot and Conditions
Dakhla is a kiteboarder’s playground in summer. The steady N–NE trade winds blow almost every day, ranging between 20–30 knots, and often getting stronger around midday. The wind usually starts picking up late morning and peaks between 12:00 and 15:00, perfect for long afternoon sessions.
The lagoon in front of Our Habitas Caravan offers wide open space and mostly flat water, especially around low tide, which makes it ideal for practicing tricks or cruising around. At high tide, the water gets a bit choppier in the middle but still plenty rideable and we'll be able to move around to find the perfect spot. Water temps sit around 24–25 °C, and with air temps close to 30 °C, it’s warm enough for a shorty or a thin full suit if you easily get cold.
What to expect?
Coaching
With BB Talkin headsets, you’ll receive real-time, tailored feedback during every session. This cutting-edge system ensures you only hear tips meant for you, even as I switch focus between riders. Coaching is conducted in semi-private sessions, pairing you with another rider at a similar level for a personalized experience.
Video Analysis
Take your progression to the next level with video analysis sessions after your rides. By reviewing your performance frame by frame, we’ll pinpoint areas for improvement and highlight what you’re doing well. This focused feedback helps solidify techniques and ensures every session builds toward your goals.
Theory Lessons
In order to maximize your performance on the water, theory lessons provide the essential knowledge behind techniques, gear, and conditions. These focused sessions ensure you understand the “why” behind the “how,” giving you the tools to tackle challenges and progress with confidence.
Downwinders
Join guided downwinders across Dakhla’s lagoon, heading towards spots like White Dune or Speed Spot. With steady wind and plenty of space, it’s a great way to work on your riding while exploring new areas. The support follows along, so you can focus on the session showing a big smile without any stress.
Exceptional meals
You’ll be eating all your meals at the Habitas Caravan restaurant, Levante—right by the lagoon. They serve fresh, local seafood and produce, mixing Moroccan spices with Latin flavors. Everything’s a la carte, so you can get breakfast, lunch, and dinner timed around your sessions—no missing a meal.
Photography
Work with a professional photographer to capture stunning action shots of your time on the water, showcasing your progress and style. You’ll also receive candid photos from around the camp, preserving the unique moments and atmosphere of the trip. These images provide a lasting memory of your experience, both on and off the water.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many hours of coaching will I receive?
Over the entire week, you’ll receive about 10 hours of coaching and guidance. This includes approximately 3.5 hours of semi-private coaching sessions, where I’ll focus on personalized tips tailored to your needs, as well as group water sessions, theory lessons, and video analysis. It’s a balanced schedule designed to give you plenty of actionable feedback while leaving time to practice during freeride sessions.
How does the semi-private coaching work?
In semi-private coaching, you’ll be paired with another rider of a similar skill level to ensure focused and personalized progression. Both of you will wear helmets equipped with BB Talkin headsets, allowing me to provide real-time feedback. I’ll switch the audio between riders so you only hear the tips that are specific to you. Depending on the conditions, I’ll either walk into the water alongside you or follow with a kite to give you the best possible coaching experience.
Can I book additional coaching?
This camp is designed to offer optimal coaching time within its schedule. While it’s not possible to book extra coaching sessions during the camp, you can contact me to arrange additional coaching in the week prior to the camp.
What skill level do I need?
Participants should be self-sufficient and able to ride upwind. To maximize the benefits, it’s recommended that you’ve already experimented with jumps and perhaps a backroll.
Can I request specific coaching goals?
Absolutely! This camp is fully tailored to your personal objectives. Together, we’ll assess your current level and, during the semi-private coaching sessions, work towards achieving your specific goals.
What kite sizes should I bring?
Most riders will find kites between 7m and 12m ideal for the conditions, though this depends on your weight and riding style. The winds are typically 20–30 knots during peak hours (12:00–15:00) but can vary, so I recommend checking the forecast before your trip and preparing for all scenarios.
Do I need to bring my own gear?
Yes, the camp price does not include kiteboarding gear, so you’ll need to bring your own equipment. However, if you don’t have your own or prefer to travel light, there is an option to rent CORE Kiteboarding equipment from Our Habitas. Be sure to arrange this well in advance by contacting us, so we can ensure availability for your needs.
Do I need a wetsuit?
In summer, Dakhla offers mild water temperatures around 24–25 °C, with air temps in the high 20s to low 30s. A 3/2 wetsuit is ideal for staying comfortable during longer sessions, especially when the wind picks up. Some riders prefer a shorty, but if you’re planning to spend a lot of time on the water or doing downwinders, a full suit gives better comfort and protection.
What happens if there is no wind?
While Dakhla offers reliable trade winds, there’s always a chance of low-wind days. In such cases, we’ll make the most of the time with theory lessons, video analysis, and other activities to enhance your kiteboarding knowledge and experience.
Do the tides affect the location?
Since we’re staying on a peninsula, the lagoon in front of the hotel is influenced by the tides, which change the riding conditions throughout the day. At low tide, more shallow areas are exposed, giving you flatter water and spots where you can stand. At high tide, the water gets deeper and a bit choppier, especially toward the center of the lagoon when the wind is strong. Closer to the edges, you can still find relatively flat water to ride.
Can I bring a non-kiting partner?
Yes, non-kiting partners are welcome! Caravan Dakhla offers a relaxing atmosphere with a pool, beachfront views, great food and some activities to enjoy while you’re on the water. That said we will be in the middle of a desert, so be mindful of that.
Can I book additional nights at Caravan Dakhla before or after the camp?
Yes, you can extend your stay depending on availability. When booking through the Our Habitas website, you’ll be able to check available dates and choose what works best for you. Personally, I always like arriving a few days early to settle in and get used to the conditions.
How do I get to Dakhla?
Most travelers fly into Dakhla Airport (VIL), just a 30‑minute drive from Habitas Caravan. There are direct flights from Casablanca, Paris (Orly), Las Palmas and a couple of other airports. Once your flight is confirmed, Habitas includes free round-trip airport transfers for stays of three nights or more—just share your arrival and departure times, and they’ll handle the rest.
